Frontier College is Canada’s original literacy organization. In Halifax, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. Bryony House Bryony House is a shelter for women and children who are fleeing domestic violence. As a welcome addition to their children’s program, Frontier College volunteers get together every Sunday afternoon to explore literacy in a fun, age-appropriate session. Youth are also able to receive help with their homework if required.
George Dixon Community Centre The George Dixon Centre runs an after school literacy program for children in this neighborhood. Frontier College volunteers run a reading circle once a week for the children providing them with opportunities to enjoy stories one to one or in groups. Children also participate in literacy activities that will develop and foster their love of reading.
Fairview Family Resource Centre The Fairview Family Resource Centre provides a variety of programs, resources and support for families in the Fairview Community. Frontier College volunteers hold a reading circle once a week for children and parents from the Fairview Community. Many of the young participants are immigrant children whose parents are attending ESL classes.
Homework Clubs
George Dixon Community Centre Power Hour The George Dixon Community Centre is operated by the Community Recreation Services of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Volunteer tutors operate a homework program (called Power Hour) once a week for elementary and junior high school students that may be having difficulty in any of their school subjects. Volunteer tutors also coordinate a variety of literacy activities that make learning fun while also encouraging these children to stay in school.
George Dixon Youth Program Volunteer tutors work one on one with youth from the Uniacke Square and surrounding areas in supporting them with their homework and working on special projects of interest to them. This program will take place every Thursday evening.
Demetrius Lane - Literacy Lane Frontier College has partnered with three organizations to bring together our expertise, resources, and networks in the community of Demetrius Lane, located in North Dartmouth. The First Baptist Church, Halifax Regional Police, and Demetrius Lane Tenant Association, have all come together with Frontier College to support the literacy needs of the children and youth in this community. While the volunteer tutors work on homework and reading, the main focus for the younger children is engaging them in fun learning activities that support their literacy and encourage them to stay in school.
The Youth will be participating in a project based on Dreams and Success showcased as a “Wall of Fame”. Youth will showcase their accomplishments and talents in art, poems, inspirational quotes, printmaking on the wall as well as photography. In addition the youth will participate in becoming authors of their own book of Dreams and Successes.
The Literacy Lane program runs every Monday and the “Wall of Fame” program is every Tuesday afternoon after school.
West End Family Initiative Literacy Program Frontier College volunteers work with the coordinator of the West End Family Initiative Society who facilitates the children and youth literacy program out of the St. Andrew’s Community Recreation Centre two evenings per week. Volunteers provide one to one tutoring/mentoring or work in small groups to support those needing assistance with homework, projects, reading, writing and math. This program runs for two hours every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Special projects, workshops and guest speakers are all part of the literacy program in this community.
In-School Tutoring Tutors work one on one and in small groups supporting classroom and resource teachers in six schools located in the Halifax Regional Municipality and as part of the School Plus program. The schools that benefit from our tutor support include Joseph Howe Elementary and Central Spryfield Elementary. While most of the support is with children that have been identified as at risk for reading, tutors also support students in all other curriculum activities.
Adult Programs
Immigrant Families Learning Together Saturday mornings an EAL Instructor and tutors work with immigrant families on their learning goals. This program is funded by Citizenship & Immigration and in partnership with St. Andrew’s Community Centre. Immigrant learners are supported with reading, writing, and conversational skill development. Children of these adult learners are also encouraged to attend and they are supported with homework, family learning objective, or participate in fun literacy related activities.
Welcoming Communities: Welcoming Immigrants as Volunteer Tutors On January 28, 2012, Frontier College, in partnership with Citizenship & Immigration and ISIS, host a workshop focused on celebrating multiculturalism and diversity in our Halifax Regional Municipalities and deliver a special volunteer tutor training workshop with a multicultural focus.
Metroworks Frontier College partners with Metroworks, an adult learning program (Cunard Centre) that assists participants in overcoming barriers to employment by providing them with the academic upgrading and skills needed for sustainable employment. Frontier College tutors provide one on one and group support in classrooms for adults in the Level 1, Level 11 and Level 111 programs as well as the Level 11 ESL classes. Tutors participate in either part-time or full-time morning and afternoon classes as well as to provide noon hour tutoring.
Solutions Learning Centre Frontier College also partners with Solutions Learning Centre in Dartmouth, NS. Solutions Learning Centre follows the NS School for adult learning curriculum (Level 1 and 11) and helps adults to overcome barriers to employment. Frontier College volunteers provide literacy, numeracy and GED support and encouragement to these learners.
One-to-One Tutoring
Frontier College will attempt to support all learners on a one to one basis if a learner is not able to attend any one of our programs. All learning takes place in public areas agreed upon by the tutor and learner. The support is student centered and based on the needs of the individual learner.
Summer Reading Tent Program
Frontier College volunteers in Halifax have reached communities all over the Halifax Regional Municipality with the RT Summer Reading Tent Program. Volunteers and staff set up their tent in various communities across the HRM community as well as participate in many community events. FC volunteers and staff tell stories, read books, give away books and carry out literacy activities in a fun filled outdoor atmosphere.
