Frontier College is Canada's original literacy organization. In Thunder Bay, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. Readers are Leaders is a partnership program with the Thunder Bay Library. We pair a volunteer Reader with a school-age Buddy. They work on reading and literacy skills through reading, games and literacy activities.
Volunteers work with children on their homework or any other difficulties they are having in school. Some programs are run in partnership with the Thunder Bay Boys & Girls Club as well as the Aboriginal Head Start program at Ogden, Ecole Gron Morgan, McKeller, Our Lady of Charity, Sherbrooke, Westmount and St. Ann Elementary schools. Other Frontier College Homework Clubs programs are taking place in the following schools: Woodcrest Elementary, Pope John Paul II Sr. Elementary, CD Howe Elementary, Algonquin Elementary, Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School and Sir Winston Churchill High School.
Chapters bookstore has been a partner with Frontier college in promoting literacy in the Thunder Bay community for several years. Various programs are run at Chapters and include a Story Time & Crafts program on the weekends, Come Hang Out with a Book an early literacy program for parents/guardians and toddlers and various special events throughout the year.
