(CANUCKS FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAM)
From both a local and provincial standpoint, I have witnessed, first hand, the powerful relationships and partnerships that Frontier College (Vancouver) has created and successfully maintained. On behalf of everyone involved with the CFEC (Canucks Family Education Program) program, I would like to extend my support, appreciation and gratitude to Frontier College for the tremendous efforts and impact they have had in working with CFEC and the Grandview/Woodlands, and Strathcona communities of Vancouver, B.C.
CFEC is proud and pleased to have been able to form a partnership with Frontier College-one which will be going into its fifth year. The role that Frontier College has had in working with CFEC has been in helping to develop and expand our Partners In Education (PIE) program by providing tutors for four of our inner-city elementary schools. CFEC's PIE program aims to achieve family literacy as a community initiative by encouraging and enabling parents to become actively involved in their child's learning at home and in the school. Parents do so by joining and participating in their child's classroom for a minimum of one hour a week. For parents who are unable to make it out to classroom sessions, Frontier College provides tutors to work one-on-one or in small groups with children. Tutors aid children in basic reading, writing and literacy activities.
Without the help of Frontier College in providing tutors for children in the Vancouver Eastside, many of the inner city school children who are struggling with basic literacy would not have the help and valuable support of the skilled tutors which Frontier College provides. Frontier College volunteers tutor at 4 different schools, with more to be placed as we branch out into 3 other schools-equaling a total of 7 (1/12th of the Vancouver School District).
I believe that Frontier College (Vancouver) is unique in that it takes a collaborative, community based approach towards developing and strengthening community partnerships. I want to congratulate the staff and volunteers for the outstanding contributions they have made in raising awareness and supporting literacy development within our community. Frontier College has a reputable name and place in Vancouver-one of which I am proud to have CFEC associated with. "
