Working with Adults

Across Canada we train volunteer tutors to work in small groups or one-to-one with individual learners who want to improve their learning skills. The philosophy of all Frontier College programs is that everyone can learn and that everyone has strengths on which learning can be built. Learners in adult programs come from all walks of life and all want to learn. Participation is voluntary. Learners are not tested when they come to our programs. Instead, they are interviewed to determine their strengths and needs. They then join one of our classes or small groups or they may be matched with trained, self-motivated, compatible tutors.

Some examples of our work with adults include:

Working with New Immigrants to Canada (ESL)

Many local agencies and organizations offer English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. At Frontier College we focus particularly on ESL students who:

  • have had limited access to education in their home countries
  • have difficulty accessing other ESL programs or aren't comfortable learning in a classroom
  • have great difficulty using English in everyday situations
  • are socially isolated
  • have been referred by a shelter or other community agency
  • are either in low income jobs, unemployed or on social assistance
  • have children who also need help with school work or literacy skills
  • have other special needs

Learners complete a form and are interviewed to determine what they want and need to learn. They are then matched with trained, compatible tutors. Tutors are trained in such areas as: identifying learner needs, setting learning goals, creating lesson plans, and strategies for strengthening students' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Volunteer tutors do not require prior teaching experience.
