Summer Reading Tents
Summer program staff and volunteers visit many community Family Resource Centres, community recreation day programs and special events involving the entire family for hours of reading and playing games. All children in the community are invited to drop in and discover that reading is more than a school activity; books are donated on a daily basis.
Bryony House
Children staying at Bryony House get together with Frontier College volunteers for an afternoon of reading and playing games. Occasionally youth receive help with their homework if required/requested.

One-to-One Tutoring with Youth
Love Links
“Leave Out Violence Everywhere” (LOVE) – volunteers are available to tutor youth on a “drop-in” basis. Topics vary and tutor/learner relationships often become role model situations where the volunteers encourage youth at risk to stay in school and impart importance of education.
Youth Advocate Program
The Youth Advocate program is designed using a community development approach where services are provided to youth between the ages of 9-14 who show risks of being involved in criminal or gang-related activities. Frontier College tutors are part of a team of individuals working with youth one-on -one creating an individualized program which builds on the strengths of the youth and the family.
One-to-One Tutoring with Adults
Bayers Westwood Adult Community Learners Group
Volunteers are matched with parents of children at the Bayers Westwood Community. While their children attend daycare at Bayers Westwood, parents receive tutoring in ESL, reading, writing, numeracy and orientation to their community as new immigrants to Halifax.
Cunard Learning Centre
Volunteers are matched with adults attending academic upgrading programs to assist where needed in various subject matters. Various tutoring times are available for literacy levels 1-3.
Elizabeth Fry Society
Volunteers are matched with individuals associated with the Society to provide tutoring in various aspects of their lives. One-to-one matching is available and times are flexible.
NOW – New Opportunities for Woman
Volunteer tutors are matched with women who seek help with their GED preparation.
Youth Leadership Development
Frontier College staff work with the local high schools and the students participating in the International Baccalaureate program. Volunteer students participate in workshops designed by Frontier College to augment their studies with the value of volunteering and what it means to their communities. The students are trained in the basics of tutoring as well as designing and starting homework clubs and reading circles within their local communities.
