Title of Position: Summer Program Coordinator
Term: Contract position. Six Months. Full-time (35 hours per week).
Location: Thunder Bay
Start date: April 2010
Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization which was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work in partnership with organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Through volunteer mobilization, youth leadership development, and community capacity building we enable communities to reach their literacy and learning goals. Many of our programs are delivered through a national network of university campus-based initiatives.
Thunder Bay
During the school year Frontier College runs tutoring programs, homework clubs and reading circles for children and youth in partnership with community agencies throughout Thunder Bay. We also deliver literacy-related workshops and conferences for organizers, parents, and tutors. In the summer we run Literacy Summer Camps for Aboriginal children and youth in approximately 30 remote First Nations communities across northern Ontario. We are seeking a Summer Program Coordinator to manage logistics, coordinate camp training and wrap-up events and assist with all aspects of programming. Travel is required.
This person will work directly with Thunder Bay program staff.
Overall Accountability
Representing Frontier College in the community, the Coordinator is a member of the Ontario program staff team and works both independently and collaboratively to carry out the work of Frontier College. This position reports to the Northern Regional Coordinator.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of supplying approximately 40 camps in 30 remote communities including sourcing, ordering, packing, storing, shipping, inventory and trouble shooting.
- Manage and trouble-shoot all aspects of travel and accommodations for 80 to100 summer camp counselors.
- Coordinate camp counsellor training and end of season debrief events (100+ people).
- Assist with hiring, screening and training of summer staff including interviews, reference checks, record keeping and workshop delivery.
- Assist with distance and on-site support to camps during the operating season.
- Assist with other aspects of programming and evaluation in the region.

- Knowledge of program delivery and community development in a northern context.
- Experience with logistics and travel in northern Ontario.
- Logistics planning and management.
- Event planning with large groups.
- Energetic, resourceful and patient.
- Ability to think critically and solve problems.
- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Able to manage stress under pressure.
- Computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet).
- Valid driver’s license and own vehicle.
- Works well independently and as part of a team.
- Enjoys working with young people.
Additional Assets
- Experience working with First Nations communities.
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Background in education.
