Position Available

Title of Position: Community Coordinator
Term: One year contract (maternity leave replacement), full time
Location: Montreal
Start date: September 2010

Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization which was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada through partnership with a variety of organizations. Through volunteer mobilization, youth leadership development and community capacity building we enable communities to reach their literacy and learning goals.

We are currently looking for a full-time Community Coordinator for a one-year contract with possibility for renewal. The location of the position is in Montreal. The selected candidate would begin in September 2010.

Job Description

The Community Coordinator is responsible for setting up and developing volunteer-based literacy and French as a Second Language activities in the community. The Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment, screening and supervision of volunteer tutors. The Community Coordinator works in partnership with several community based organizations and with universities. The selected candidate will report directly to the Quebec Manager and will work with a team of Community Coordinators and a team of volunteers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities Recruit, train and supervise two volunteer organizational teams; Supervise the recruitment, screening, orientation and supervision of volunteer tutors; Organize and facilitate volunteer training sessions; Manage and develop partnerships with other community organizations; Coordinate summer programming activities such as literacy summer camps in aboriginal communities ;

Organize and deliver conferences, training workshops, volunteer committee meetings and other special events; Consolidate the presence of Frontier College on university campuses and within the community by participating in various university and community events; Complete administrative tasks related to activities.

Skills and Attributes Bachelor’s degree in Humanities or other related field; Experience in volunteer management; Experience in literacy or community-based French language instruction or another community field; Skills and experience in facilitation and training; Bilingualism (working knowledge of English and French); Experience in networking and in managing community partnerships; Organizational and communication skills; Intercultural competencies; Ability to establish priorities and to work independently.

Compensation: Salary in accordance with Frontier College’s salary scale and benefits (after 3 months); 35 hours/week, flexibility required: occasional evenings and weekends.
