Frontier College is Canada's original literacy organization. In London, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. Frontier College partners with two organizations in London that help adults and youth work towards getting their GED: Nokee Kwe Native Literacy Centre and Youth Opportunities Unlimited. At both centres, learning is student directed, through a combination of technology and textbooks. Frontier College tutors assist students when they have questions, conduct workshops to small groups on specific topics, and are sometimes paired one-to-one with learners. Tutors work with learners on all subjects, with a particular focus on reading, writing and math.
From October to April, Frontier College runs homework clubs with elementary and high school students at the following partners:
London Intercommunity Health Centre
The London Intercommunity Health Centre runs the SHAC program. SHAC stands for Snack, Homework, Activity and Craft. This after-school program, which runs in the east end of the city, is open to elementary school children. Frontier College tutors help with homework and coordinate fun learning activities for the children.
Northwest London Resource Centre
The Northwest London Resource Centre runs an afterschool program for high school students. Frontier College tutors primarily help with homework and also provide mentoring for the students in the program.
Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre
The Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre runs an afterschool program for high school students in the neighbourhood. Frontier College tutors primarily help with homework and also provide mentoring for the students in the program.
Our partners for in-school tutoring are H.B. Beal Secondary School, Thames Secondary School and Sir George Ross Secondary School. At Beal, our tutors work one-to-one and in small groups with students who are struggling in all subject areas. At both Thames and Ross, tutors work one-to-one and in small groups with grade 9 students who are struggling with literacy.
Frontier College runs a reading circle three times a week at the Boys and Girls Club of London. The Reading Circle program provides an opportunity for learners to enjoy stories with one-to-one support and in small groups, and includes learning games and activities to encourage participants to develop a love of reading and learning. The tutors in this program regularly organize events and special activities, such as an egg drop competition, spelling bees and making holiday decorations and writing letters to Santa.
