Frontier College is Canada's original literacy organization. In North Bay, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. With the support of trained tutors, Frontier College offers several programs in the city of North Bay. Our school based programs currently operate in four schools: J.W. Trusler Public School, and St. Hubert, Mother St. Bride and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Schools. Tutors are paired with a learner for the program year and meet once weekly during the school day to provide help and support in a variety of areas. While much of our program encourages literacy and reading skills, we also provide support in math, science and other subjects when possible. Our tutors at times have also worked with English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
Both Alliance French Immersion Public and Mother St. Bride schools have after-school Homework Clubs. Geared toward upper-grade students, Frontier College-trained volunteers assist with homework and assignments, as well as provide role-modeling and mentorship opportunities for youth.
In addition, we have two community based homework clubs at the North Bay Public Library and at Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Public Library Homework Club is open to all children from Grades 3-8, with registration done through the library children’s department. The Big Brothers Big Sisters homework club provides support to newcomer children involved in the BBBS Host Program.
