Literacy Programs in Sudbury, Ontario

Frontier College is Canada's original literacy organization. In Sudbury, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. One-to-One Tutoring with Children

Our school-based programs operate currently in three schools: Lansdowne, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Anne Public Schools. Tutors are paired with a learner for the program year and meet once weekly during the school day to provide help and support in a variety of areas. While much of our program encourages literacy and reading skills, we also provide support in math, science and other subjects when possible. Our tutors work with learners in both official languages, and have at times also worked with English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

Homework Club

At Lansdowne, Princess Anne and Queen Elizabeth schools we also hold after-school Homework Clubs. Geared toward upper-grade students, Frontier College-trained volunteers assist with homework and assignments, as well as provide role-modeling and mentorship opportunities for youth.

Reading Circle

Volunteers host a Reading Circle at the YWCA Geneva House, a transition home for women and children in crisis. The Reading Circle program provides an opportunity for learners to enjoy stories with volunteers one-to-one, as well as in a small group, and often includes other activities and games focused on learning and fun.
