We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. One-to-One Tutoring with Youth

ARIES and Cedar Walk are alternative educational day programs for ‘street-involved' Native youth ages 13 to 18 years. Core subjects up to Grade 10 and beyond are offered to increase student’s literacy and numeracy, as well as to help them make the transition back to school or the workplace. Volunteers assist these youth with help in a variety of school subjects. Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with learners.

The Fresh Start Educational Program is run by Hastings Adult Education at Britannia Community Centre and is supported by the placement of Frontier College volunteers. The program offers an opportunity for youth between the ages of 15 and 19 to achieve their High School diploma in an alternative classroom environment that is supported by staff, resource teachers, and volunteers. Our volunteers help students in basic core subject areas. Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with learners.

Take a Hike is an alternative education program that engages at-risk youth in grades 10-12 through a unique combination of outdoor experiential learning, academics, counseling, and community involvement. The program operates out of John Oliver Secondary School. Our volunteers help students in basic core subject areas. Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with learners.

Bynre Creek Highschool ESL program. Volunteers may choose to help in an ESL class or afterschool homework club. Volunteers in this program are matched with immigrant and refugee youth who are struggling with reading, writing, speaking and mathematics.

Homework Clubs

In the Britannia High School Homework Club volunteers work with students in grades 6-12 on a variety of subjects, in a relaxed homework club environment that is supervised by a Homework Club Organizer. Volunteers are matched to work one-on-one or in a small group with learners based on the subjects that they feel most comfortable tutoring.

The African Homework Club is run in partnership with the Multicultural Family Centre and is for African children, or children of African descent. Children range from ages 6-12, many of whom are recent immigrants and/or refugees. Volunteers assist with homework help, reading, writing, and story-telling in a community learning and homework club setting.

Family Literacy

Communities and Friends Learning Together (CFLT) is an after school learning club run by Frontier College. Volunteers work together to plan and facilitate fun and inclusive learning activities under the supervision of Frontier College staff. Volunteers may also work one-on-one with learners on homework help and reading activities. Many of the learners are new immigrants or refugees.

One-to-One Tutoring with Adults

The Domestic Workers Adult ESL Program offers one-on-one or small group tutoring to Domestic Workers (live-in caregivers and nannies) from the West Coast Domestic Workers Association. Volunteers work independently with caregivers on ESL lessons and learning activities which are guided by the interests and requests of the caregivers. Activities may include helping learners with conversational English, grammar, pronunciation and comprehension, or developing skills related to writing resumes and cover letters (workplace literacy). Volunteers usually spend an extra hour a week planning lessons. Female volunteers have been requested by the learners.

African Women’s English Support Group is run in partnership with the Multicultural Family Centre. This program focuses on basic ESL, work place, and life skills literacy for African immigrant and refugee women. Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with the women. Due to the nature of the all-female group of learners, only female volunteers will be accepted.

The Community Literacy and Learning Circles Program (CLLC) is a partnership between Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, Langara College, and Frontier College. It is an innovative program for immigrant women who want to improve their literacy and essential skills, and who want to learn about and participate in organizing and leading a community based project. Program participants attend weekly learning circles and are supported in their learning by Frontier College volunteers. Volunteers work one-to-one with participants on ESL/literacy lessons and learning activities which are guided by the interests and requests of the participants.
