Frontier College names Sherry Campbell as president
Toronto, ON – November 20, 2007 – Frontier College, Canada’s original literacy organization, has named Sherry Campbell as president.
Ms. Campbell joined Frontier College in 2005. She served initially as national director of programs and subsequently as executive director. As president, she will provide central leadership and day-to-day direction of the College, will lead the College's program operations and communications activities, and will work closely with the Frontier College Foundation in its fundraising activities. She succeeds John O'Leary, who stepped down earlier this year after three decades of service to Frontier College and the cause of literacy. “Sherry has a clear vision for Frontier College's future and a deep respect for its 108-year history,” said Catharine Heddle, chair of Frontier College's board of governors. “She leads a dedicated, creative and talented group of staff, volunteers and partners who are devoted to social justice and to making a difference in the lives of Canadians through the power of literacy and learning. This is a bright moment in Frontier College's history.” As Canada's original literacy organization, Frontier College recruits and trains volunteers to work with Canadian children, youth and adults from all over Canada, in both French and English. Historically, Frontier College recruited Labourer-Teachers to teach and work alongside their fellow labourers in mines, lumber camps, railway camps and other remote locations. Today, Frontier College works at Canada's socio-economic frontiers, operating innovative literacy programs including homework clubs, reading circles, summer reading camps, an independent studies program for disabled adults, one-on-one tutoring for adults, and the Beat the Street program for at-risk youth. Frontier College also helps other community-based organizations set up and run literacy programs for their own participants. “Literacy is an important issue that impacts all facets of society” said Campbell. “I am honoured to serve the College at such an important time in its history and for a cause that impacts individuals, communities, schools, the work place and our country as a whole.” About Frontier College
Literacy is an essential skill in today's world. At Frontier College, we believe it's a fundamental right. Low literacy skills are directly linked to poverty, poor health and high unemployment. Forty-two percent of adult Canadians have trouble with everyday tasks that involve reading. That's millions of Canadians who are not reaching their potential. Through a network of thousands of volunteers, Frontier College is helping people to realize their potential and seize the opportunities that come their way. www.frontiercollege.ca For further information:
