Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right, and we work inclusively with volunteers and community partners to help children, youth and adults build the skills and confidence they need to accomplish their goals. Our network of staff and volunteers provides excellent and effective programming to improve literacy in communities across Canada, from coast to coast to coast. We value mutual respect and collaboration in all our relationships.
We are seeking Community Literacy Workers in all nine Eeyou Istchee communities who will work as a team to run literacy activities in their communities. Community Literacy workers will hold various learning activities such as reading circles, book giveaways, writing contests and storytelling sessions.

Overall Accountability
The Community Literacy Workers will report to the Camp Coordinator throughout the duration of the project, and work collaboratively with the Program Assistant.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Attend training in Val D’or
  • Provide weekly literacy programming for children 5-12 and their families
  • Provide one or two weekly activities for youth aged 13-17
  • Offer programming both in-person and from a distance (Radio, Social Media)
  • Encourage community involvement in programming
  • Attend weekly meetings and phone calls with Frontier College staff
  • Complete forms and documents provided by Frontier College
Skills and Attributes:
All candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet all the following requirements:
  • Be mature, punctual, responsible, and able to work with little supervision
  • Enjoy working with young children. Previous experience is a bonus.
  • Experience or interest in the fields of education, teaching or community programming
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Be familiar with local leaders, culture and activities in the community
