Literacy Programming in Eabametoong First Nation and Marten Falls First Nation
Today we announced the results of our Northern Literacy Catalyst Project, a three-year initiative funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). OTF Grant Review Team member Elaine Lynch was on hand to congratulate Frontier College and hear more about how the $450,000 Grow grant made it possible to offer community-based programming geared towards the emotional well-being of children and youth in the Eabametoong and Marten Falls First Nations.
“I applaud the efforts of Frontier College and the Ontario Trillium Foundation to build a sustainable literacy program for children and youth in Eabametoong First Nation and Marten Falls First Nation,” said Michael Gravelle, MPP for Thunder Bay – Superior North. “When children and youth are given a solid foundation in literacy they will build new skills and confidence to ensure lifelong success while strengthening their community.”
Since September 2016, in partnership with Eabametoong First Nation and Marten Falls First Nation, Frontier College hired and trained Community Literacy Catalysts (CLC) to deliver literacy programs specific to the needs of each community. The CLCs also offered training to community members on how to set up and deliver literacy activities to other residents. Frontier College provides mentorship, training, and resource support to the CLC.
“With this generous donation from Ontario Trillium Foundation, and in partnership with Eabametoong First Nation and Marten Falls First Nation, we have built local capacity by helping organizations reinforce their ability to support literacy in their communities. It also provided the Community Literacy Catalysts an opportunity to build their leadership skills, have mentors, and become transformative leaders in their communities,” says Stephen Faul, President and CEO, Frontier College.
