Recognizing Our Incredible Supporters

Every year, a highlight of our Annual General Meeting is when we announce the recipients of awards given to individuals and organizations who go above and beyond in support of Frontier College and our mission of improving literacy across Canada.

This year, in addition to the Fitzpatrick Award, given to an organization that has shown outstanding support for literacy, and the Companion Award, given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to to the cause of literacy, we presented the inaugural Joyce Matthews National Volunteer Award to an outstanding volunteer.

Named in honour of former Frontier College Board Member, donor, friend, and Reading Circle volunteer, Joyce Matthews, who passed away this past April, the Joyce Matthews National Volunteer Award celebrates volunteers who show commitment to literacy and our organization. This year's recipient is Narinée Halajian, a volunteer from Concordia University in Montreal who solidified a partnership and created a sustainable literacy program for young participants in a downtown sports program. n and her story is nothing short of inspiring for every young university student who one day decides to make a difference in their community.

This year’s recipient of the Fitzpatrick Award is Northern Vision Development LP, a partner and supporter of Frontier College’s Second-Century Labourer-Teacher (SCLT) program since 2012. Northern Vision Development is a private real estate partnership with a mandate to acquire and manage properties with strong growth prospects in Whitehorse. Since its creation, NVD has also been deeply engaged in the Whitehorse community through involvement in volunteer boards and active participation in many social aspects of Whitehorse, beyond real estate. The support of NVD’s Hotels Division to Frontier College has enabled the significant improvement of the skills and livelihoods of their immigrant employees through tailor-made tutoring and English programs.

Frontier College friend and former Board of Directors Chair Lynn McDonald is the recipient of the 2018 Companion Award. During her time on the board, Lynn demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to the cause of literacy through her volunteerism with Frontier College. She was a valued member of the Finance and Governance committees and a founding member of the Human Resources committee. Her generosity extends beyond volunteering on the board; Lynn is a significant donor to Frontier College whose financial support has enabled many learners to participate in our programs.

Please join us in celebrating these vital supporters of Frontier College!
