Louis Street Summer Fest
On June 30th, to kick off the summer season, June Davis and her team at the Louis Street Community Association planned a SummerFest event for the Louis Street residents. I made some time to stop by the event at June's specific request; I brought along some books and set them up for the organizers to give to all the kids who stopped by with their families. The kids were thrilled when the Greater Sudbury Police Service stopped by with a patrol car for them to explore; they also loved the helium balloons, face painting and many other activities that were set up for them.
Once set up was complete and the kids settled into the activities, I found out why June requested my presence: she graciously presented me and Frontier College with an award she had made in recognition of our Readers Are Leaders After-School Homework Club. We started the program in the fall of 2012 and it has been a smashing success. The program runs four days a week and has gotten so popular we have had to split the kids into Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday groups.
June has been a wonderful partner and I am so grateful for all of the hard work she puts into our program, ensuring the kids in her community have access to quality programming that suits their individual needs.
